We were actually in class when an US Airways flight 154 ditched into the Hudson River today and those of us with laptops a found our within minutes what had happened. I’m sure that over the next couple of days the news will continue to saturate us all with stories of this truly incredible event. My first reaction was to turn conveniently to the physician next to me and ask, “What are the effects of hypothermia?”
Given the fact that the temperature of the Hudson was between 30-40 degrees fahrenheit… His answer made me realize how amazing it was that everyone was ok, beyond the fact that, you know, a plane safely landed in the Hudson River.
Update: Almost ironicaly, the NIH out a release entitled ‘Hypothermia: A Cold Weather Risk for Older People‘ today.
